Habitat for Humanity is an equal opportunity program that provides simple, decent, affordable home ownership opportunities to low-income families living between 25-50% of the area's median income.

Individuals or families interested in partnering with Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity must first attend an informational meeting where members of the Family Selection Committee explain the application process, distribute applications and answer questions.

Applications received in the GWHFH office by the application deadline are considered for homewnership. The Family Selection Committee thoroughly reviews each application, verifying income and current living situation, to ensure that the three criteria for a Habitat home (need, ability to pay and willingness to partner) are met. A credit report is obtained to determine long-term debt ratio and ability to pay a monthly mortgage. Qualified applicants take part in a home interview, where two Family Selection Committee members evaluate actual living conditions and discuss the applicant's situation.

When the review process is complete, the Family Selection Committee recommends qualified families to the Board of Directors for entry into a lottery pool or for selection, depending on the particular search. Once an applicant has been approved as a prospective homeowner, the Family Partnership Committee continues the relationship and assigns a family partner to help the family prepare for homeownership.
